5 Lands Walk is an initiative of Gosford City Council and various cultural and community groups. The event will take place with the cultural program and community walk between MacMasters Beach and Terrigal on Saturday 3 July 2010.
The Five Lands Walk brings together local artists, musicians, environmentalists, historians and the Aboriginal community, to provide a broad range of arts and cultural activities, including talks to explain the winter migration of humpback whales to their breeding grounds.
The event focussing on the cultural history of these towns is a joint venture of Gosford City Council, local Aboriginal custodians and many social, cultural and sporting organisations.
Entertainment and performers will be showcased along the stretch of the events route, with ceremonies and celebrations throughout each community as the walk progresses.
Park at the finish line at Terrigal for the start of proceedings - shuttle buses will be on hand to ferry participants to the start at MacMasters Beach.
"Latitude 33" Latitude 33 is a celebration of place, devised to explore the diversity of social and cultural values, objectives and possibilities of the 5 Lands Walk at Avoca Beach. It is a multi-media stage performance incorporating live music, dance, computer-generated imaging, film, text and spoken word exploring historic and contemporary references relevant to latitude 33º in a global and historical sense.
Latitude 33 connects the three southern continents across the globe lying on latitude 33º south. In Australia is Avoca Beach (the geographically central point of the 5 Lands Walk), in South Africa is Cape Town and in South America is Valparaíso, Chile. Performers from all three places will participate in the project. The five “lands” explored by the production include the three coastal settlements, together with the seas and stars connecting them across latitude 33º south.
Latitude 33 explores the history and indigenous and contemporary culture of Avoca Beach, Cape Town and Valparaíso, connecting them through commonalities in music, dance and celebrations of nature as well as through their shared histories: from ancient times, through European maritime exploration & its impact on the local peoples and their culture, to the present day and beyond, to the universal.
Latitude33 provides a commitment to access and equity, not only for the Darkinjung people of the Central Coast, but also for the diverse indigenous and non-indigenous cultures of the three southern continents.
Latitude 33 is a project of the Avoca Beach chapter of the 5 Lands Walk and was conceived by international award-winning Avoca Beach composer Yantra de Vilder, who is writing the music. Avoca lawyer, theatre producer and playwright Pauline Wright is the author of the narrative. Acclaimed local Aboriginal musician Gavi Duncan is featured in the soundtrack and performers from Cape Town and Valparaíso will also be participating. The design is by NIDA students under the direction of acclaimed set designer Michael Scott-Mitchell.
The performance will take place on Saturday 26 June 2010, on the weekend before the 5 Lands Walk, at Avoca Beach Picture Theatre, commencing at 8pm, with an informal campfire on the beach before the performance, starting at 6pm.
